Family Mediators:

There are many kinds of mediators – most are comfortable mediating certain types of disputes for which they have familiarity, such as business matters or family disputes.  Those who work specifically with families have often taken advanced training dealing with issues that confront families and children, in particular pre or post divorce issues, visitation, custody issues, etc. Family mediators come from a wide range of professional backgrounds including the legal profession, healthcare, counseling, education and other caring professions.

In choosing a mediator to work with, make sure the mediator is experienced and is affiliated with professional organizations such as a local Dispute Resolution Center, associations tied to their particular area of licensure, and/or business and professional organizations.  It is through membership in these organizations that mediators are required to continually keep up-to-date with current educational standards and also receive invaluable training in new techniques.  Most professional organizations also subscribe to or “uphold” a higher standard of professional “ethics” and “guidelines”.
